Tenants on the Pepys estate in south
London are battling to retain a high rise tower block set to become
home to private residents as part of a wider regeneration
scheme.
Lewisham Council plans to demolish five tower blocks
on the estate, but tenants, joined by modernist architectural group
DOCOMOMO have condemned the plans.
Catherine Cooke,
spokesperson for the group, said: ‘The downgrading of the
architecture is a loss for society and for residents.’
 TOWER BATTLE: ‘Fine modernist design’
She
praised the estate, which was designed by leading Greater London
Council architect Ted Hollamby, saying if offered far higher space
standards than today.
If the council had not tampered with
the estate by cladding two of the blocks, it would be listed as an
example of ‘fine modernist design’, Ms Cooke added.
The
Tenants Action Group has commissioned a firm of architects to draw
up an alternative proposal for the estate. But Lewisham’s deputy
mayor Gavin Moore said its plan would offer greater diversity,
better housing and a sustainable community
