Week 1 - 4
Topic
Foundation in graphic skills and their application - papers, cards, model-making. Media available to graphic artist and model maker. Materials available for models and prototypes - plastics, woods, metals.
Theory of material properties and the use of standard components when manufacturing products.
Ability to use a range of graphic design aids manual and automated / computer - by demonstration and use.
Able to incorporate ICT methods into design and manufacturing work.
Outcome
Able to sketch confidently freehand and constructional.
Able to render illustrations using variety of methods and techniques.
Able to model in 2D and 3D.
Able to choose and select appropriate graphic and resistant materials.
Able to use manual, mechanical and computer aids.
Week 4 - 7
Topic
Graphic design product exercise - Healthy Living cereal package, scale full size, 2D and 3D net, design ideas, working drawings / nets. Analyse existing
packaging on the market. Know about production techniques for card and
printing.
Outcome
Full size net to form package, fully rendered in creative and imaginative manner. High quality design work.
Week 8 - 12
Topic
Product analysis and prototype development - a Personal Communicator. A new product, hand-held device.
Open to imaginative interpretation.
Analyse similar technology in existing products, e.g, WAP phones, pagers, pocket computers, personal assistants.
Outcome
A prototype model, accurately produced. Good use made of materials.
Production materials accurately listed. Creative and imaginative design work, developing original thinking.
Week 13 -15
Preparation for UNIT 1 examination.
Able to analyse products in a critical written form.
Able to sketch confidently in 2D and 3D, including sectional and exploded
parts.
Able to undertake preparatory investigation and research for coursework
project.
Preparation for UNIT 2 coursework project.
